Who:        Nick Fish, Portland Parks Commissioner

Cody and April Goldberg, parents of Harper Goldberg

    When:   10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 23

Where:   Office of Commissioner Nick Fish, Portland City Hall, 1221 S.W. Fourth Avenue, Room 240, downtown Portland

On behalf of Timber Jim, the longtime mascot of the Portland Timbers soccer team, the Timbers Army will be presenting a special donation to help build “Harper’s Playground,” an inclusive playground to be built in North Portland’s Arbor Lodge Park. The donation, which represents 100% of the proceeds from the sale of a commemorative Timbers scarf, is being presented to Portland Parks Commissioner Nick Fish and the family of Harper Goldberg at a special event at Portland City Hall at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 23.

“Harper’s Playground” is named after 5-year-old Harper, who has Emanuel Syndrome, but who continues to defy the odds in her battle to gain independence. “Harper’s Playground” will build community by providing an inclusive playground structure at Arbor Lodge Park where children and adults of all abilities can play together. Her parents, Cody and April Goldberg, who live near Arbor Lodge Park, have pledged to raise $200,000 for the project by next summer.

“The support of the Timbers Army has been instrumental is raising the visibility of the great project,” noted Commissioner Fish. “There is a tremendous need for this type of inclusive play facility in our community and the Timbers are setting the standard for other businesses and individuals to make their own contributions to help make Harper’s Playground a reality, not only for Harper, but for all children with special needs.”

    - Background -
In early September, the Goldbergs contacted Sierra Smith, Community Outreach Director for the Portland Timbers; she in turn put the Goldbergs in touch with members of the Timbers Army, the supporters group that sits in the north end of PGE Park during Timbers matches.

Working in conjunction with 107ist, the non-profit trust that serves as the engine of the Timbers Army, the group raised over $3,000 through the sale of scarves commemorating the Timbers’ final match at PGE Park before the stadium’s remodeling for Major League Soccer.

In addition, Timber Jim, who’s been the team’s mascot on and off for more than 30 years, pledged to organize a platoon of Army members who will help construct the inclusive park, which will feature ramps allowing wheelchair access, swings and equipment with back supports,  and activities for kids with hearing and visual impairments.

"We are humbled and honored by the generosity this donation represents,” says Cody Goldberg.  “The money is a big help, and the spirit of love and perseverance that Timber Jim and the Timbers Army bring to this project is even bigger."

A second commemorative scarf, this one featuring the Harper’s Playground logo, will go on sale over the holidays, with 100% of the proceeds again going to support this important project.

Timbers Army Love! October 01 2010

    Harpers Army,

We keep growing, and see this message from our friends with the Timbers Army...

    Hi Cody,

Sierra Smith with the Portland Timbers has forwarded your contact info to me.
I'm with the Timbers Army, the supporters group for the Portland Timbers.
On Sept 2nd, the Timbers played their final regular season match at PGE park prior to the move to MLS.
It was a special moment for the fans, and a scarf is being made to commemorate the occasion.
Timber Jim would like to donate the proceeds of the scarf sale to Harper's Playground.
Jim and I have also been looking for a spot and a reason to build an accessible treehouse for kids with disabilities.
It is a project near and dear to his heart, and we'd like to help.
The nice thing about being in the Timbers Army is, well, we have an army at our disposal.
Best to you and your family.
    Yours Truly,
    James Harrison

Rummage Sale Success! August 23 2010

A huge thank you to Sonja Hoffman and the Peace Lutheran Church for hosting our rummage sale.  The space was perfect!  And, of course, thank you to everyone who donated items and to those of you who came to shop.  The sale was a huge success - we raised $1,500!!!  That puts us just one step closer to building our playground.   Our volunteers are the best.  To the many who helped set up, take down, make food, and sell ice cream - thank you!

Kickball Tournament Success! August 18 2010

Many thanks to Colleen Finn and Recesstime Sports League for the huge support on August 14th!  RSL's year end kickball tournament was also a fundraiser for Harper's Playground.  The kickball teams participating raised $1,609, and we can't thank them all enough.  THANKS!!!  Special shout out to The Eastsliders and Team Aughra for the extra effort of our behalf.  We also made great contacts with folks in community grants at Umqua Bank and now have a volunteer grant writer whom we met out on the kickball fields as well.  Thanks Colleen!!!

Jewish Review Article! August 04 2010

Many thanks to The Jewish Review for this great article!

    Just A Check In July 28 2010

Anyone and everyone.  It's just been a while, so I'm making a posting today to keep it fresh.  All is going well, but we've been so busy tackling our task list that updating the blog has taken a backseat.  Some key notes:

National Night at is this Saturday, July 31st at Arbor Lodge Park
NINE (New Integrated Networking Experience) is this Friday, July 30th.  Both above events are going to promote Harper's Playground.

We're feverishly working on preparations for our big rummage sale coming up on August 21st.  Peace Lutheran Church on N Rosa Parks is where we'll be all day.  Come on out!

Finally, keep an eye out for our "save-the-date" for the early 2011 Auction Party.  That will be coming soon, and should be a big night.

That's about it for now.  Thanks for having a look.

    Inspiring Story June 21 2010

    Greetings Harper's Playground Family,

Many thanks go out to Stephanie Knight for sharing this link to a very inspiring story about a park project similar to ours.  We love reading about success stories, and get motivation by stories like this.  We've been out of touch a bit too long.  We're spending all our efforts trying to complete the final budget, filling out grant applications, hosting board meetings, building marketing materials etc that we often neglect the blog.  Here are just a few key highlights to share from the past few weeks:

    • Harper's 5th birthday party in the park - attended by Roe Ellen Coleman amongst many other of our first batch of donors.
    • A donation of $520.05 from the children of Shir Tikvah Congregation school.
    • Our official letter of endorsement from Portland Parks & Recreation urging us to continue moving forward.

Our donor list is up-to-date.  Please remember to check into that page to see that we've listed your name.  If you think you should be listed, but are not - please contact us.

    April, Cody, Harper & Lennon
